Marine & Canal Boat Electrical Services

One of very few electricians in London who actually specialise in marine work, from narrowboats up to MCA-certified commercial passenger vessels.

Full Vessel Rewiring

Complete strip-out and rewire to marine standards, including distribution boards for 240V and 415V 3-phase systems.

Fault Finding & Diagnostics

Tracking down intermittent faults, dead circuits, and electrical gremlins on boats, using proper diagnostic equipment rather than guesswork.

Battery & Power Systems

Propulsion battery replacement and upgrade, shore power connections, inverter systems, and selector switches.

ISO & MCA Standards

Work to ISO 13297:2020 (small craft DC/AC systems), ISO 23625:2025 (lithium-ion batteries) and ISO 16315:2026 (electric propulsion), plus MCA standards for commercial vessels. Don't know your BSS from your RCD? No problem, I'll walk you through it in plain English.

Heating Conversion

Moving vessels over from diesel heating to full electric: underfloor heating, electric radiators, and skirting heaters.

Lighting & AV Systems

Downlights, RGB LED strip lighting, emergency lighting, sign lighting, CCTV installation, and AV cabling.

A closer look at the job

A few recent jobs, ranging from engine bay rewires to finished cabin lighting.

Not your average sparky

Marine electrical is a specialism that takes experience, knowledge, and the right approach.

01

Marine Specialism

Marine electrical work is a specialism in its own right. Katy works specifically with boats and commercial vessels, and understands the additional demands of electrical systems in the marine environment.

02

MCA Experience

Experience working to MCA standards on inland waterways vessels, and working directly with MCA surveyors on commercial passenger vessel projects.

03

Full Project Management

Survey, MCA coordination, sourcing materials, final testing. It's all covered, start to finish.

04

Complex Systems

Battery banks, inverters, motor controllers, heating conversions. These jobs go well past basic wiring, and that's the point.

05

Canal Network Based

Based on and around London's canal network. I know the marine environment because I work in it every day.

06

Direct Service

You deal with Katy. No call centre, no subcontractors passed the job down the chain, no chasing someone else for answers.

Trusted by London boaters

"Katy was super helpful, efficient, prompt & professional. After seven years afloat, these are rare qualities indeed."

Ben Southworth

London boater, new ignition switch and engine rewire

"Katy is a great find! She turns up on time, gets the work done, and doesn't overcharge. She is a great communicator, keeping in touch throughout the job, making adjustments where necessary and giving thoughtful and top notch advice. Such a relief to find a trustworthy and honest tradesperson, as there's a lot of wrong'uns about, and we have been lucky enough to welcome her aboard. Thank you so much Katy!"

Meet Katy Bartlett

"I started working on boats when I bought my own. It was a massive jump from the domestic, land-based electrical work I'd been doing up until then. Luckily I met Keith Meadowcroft (Volt Master Training), and he took me under his wing and pointed me in the right direction."

Katy's been an electrician since 2013, and moved onto the river in 2018. She went on to get her BMET (British Marine Electrical Technician) qualification, working across various boats and marinas around London to build up experience. Three years followed in the maintenance department at Thames Clippers, on their fleet on the Thames and at their dry dock in Tilbury. That's where she got properly familiar with commercial vessel systems and the standards they're held to.

Now running KBES, Katy led the complete electrical refit of MV Beauchamp, a 22-metre MCA-certified commercial passenger vessel on Regent's Canal. She coordinated directly with MCA surveyors and used marine-grade materials throughout.

A shore power fault on your liveaboard, a full system overhaul on a commercial vessel, it's the same deal: straightforward, reliable work and no middlemen.

Ready to discuss your project?

Canal boat that needs rewiring, commercial vessel that needs work done to MCA standards, either way, get in touch and we'll talk through what you actually need.

What happens after you get in touch?

You'll hear back within 1–2 days. Most jobs can be assessed remotely, and that's free. What you'll get is an estimate rather than a fixed quote, since the full picture usually only shows itself once the work's underway. If your boat's near me, I'm happy to come and take a look in person too, also free.
